Slim line, or windows with a narrow mullion

blog | 04.07.2024

Open space, barrier-free construction, connecting the house with the landscape that surrounds it - these are all features of contemporary architectural design.

However, large spaces require very good lighting, preferably by natural means, which is why designers and architects are turning to large-scale glazing to help brighten up the space and make it even bigger optically.

A product increasingly used in modern homes are therefore windows and doors with a narrow mullion.

Narrow mullion windows - slim line and increased glazing area

Narrow mullion windows are a solution which guarantees an increased glazing area and thus a slimmer window line. This also results in more effective illumination of the rooms with sunlight, which in turn has a positive effect on the health and well-being of the occupants.

floating vs. fixed mullion

Before considering which mullion to choose (floating or fixed), let's start with an explanation of what a window mullion is and what its function is.

Mullions are used to divide the window plane vertically. The fixed mullion is a fixed part of the window structure which connects the top and bottom parts of the frame. It is always visible, even when all window sashes are open.

The floating post, on the other hand, is only visible when the window sashes are closed, because when the window is fully opened, the post opens together with the passive sash to which it is attached.

Advantages of the floating and fixed mullion

As mentioned above, the floating mullion opens together with the window, giving you a wide and unobstructed view from the window. This solution is great for balcony windows - going out onto the balcony or terrace is not a problem and it is also easier to move large objects, e.g. garden furniture. Please note, however, that when opening a window with a floating mullion, it is necessary to keep the right order - first open the active sash (with the handle), and then the passive sash.

Windows with a fixed mullion have one significant advantage, namely the possibility to tilt and open each sash independently of the others, which is very convenient especially if you keep something on the windowsill e.g. flowers or other decorations.

The floating mullion in its standard version is narrower than the fixed mullion. The difference, depending on the selected profile, is approximately 20 mm.* However, the floating mullion can also be available in a narrow version, in which case its width, depending on the profile, can be as little as 44 mm.

*For the Aluplast ID 4000 profile, the fixed mullion is 84 mm wide, the floating mullion is 64 mm wide in the standard version and 44 mm wide in the narrow version.
