Hidden windows hinges

Hidden windows hinges - aesthetics or practice?

blog | 03.07.2023

Trends in modern architecture have been oscillating around the fascination with large glazing and the sensitivity to detail and aesthetics of window joinery for several years now. The need for light, opening up space, contact with nature and, last but not least, elegance and style determine the popularity of large structures and non-standard solutions. One of the inconspicuous but key elements that influence the appearance of a window are the hinges. Hidden hinges, also called concealed hinges, are particularly popular. What makes them special? Besides being aesthetically pleasing, are they also practical and functional? Let's find out!

Concealed hinges in windows - what are they?

Concealed hinges in windows are fittings built into the frame. They are completely hidden under the rebate of the sash, so they remain completely invisible on the window and do not disturb the line of the sash. The way they are used, however, is no different to that of standard hinges.

Advantages of concealed hinges in the window

Durability and convenience

The aspect of durability definitely speaks in favour of concealed hinges. Why? Their classic version protrudes beyond the window frame, so they are covered up with covers. However, these have a big disadvantage - after some time, they change colour when exposed to sunlight and no longer look aesthetically pleasing. It is not uncommon for the covers to not only change their shade (in the case of white covers, they turn yellow), but also to crumble after a few years.

If you opt for concealed hinges, you will not have to worry about this issue. All hinge components are concealed in the window frame, so no protruding element will change its colour or break off. Maintenance and keeping the windows clean is also easier in this case, as the dust-collecting elements are concealed.

In addition, concealed hinges guarantee high stability of the fitting and the absence of problems such as e.g. sash dropping and problems with fitting the sash to the window frame. The faultless operation of concealed window fittings is also due to the aforementioned lack of contact of the hinges with dirt from outside.

Tightness

In windows with hidden hinges, the continuity of the seal around the entire perimeter is maintained without having to break it at the point of the installed hinge. This guarantees uncompromising tightness of the window.

Security

Windows using window hardware with concealed hinges have the same or more effective burglary protection as models with standard hardware. The locking system in windows with concealed hinges consists, among others, of mushroom-shaped pins with octagonal cross-sections and strikers made of either standard or burglar-proof steel, which are fitted to them and distributed around the perimeter of the window.

Timeless elegance

Concealed hinges offer manufacturers the possibility of creating not only functional, but also very impressive windows. Today, the trick is not to produce a window, the trick is to impress with a window. We can create windows of any shape, texture and colour we wish.

Which windows can be fitted with concealed hinges?

Concealed hinges can be installed in PVC, timber and aluminium windows. Due to their design, concealed hinges are recommended for windows with large size and weight, but they are also perfect for windows whose size does not exceed the standard values. They are ideal for modern architecture rich in large glazing as well as traditional realisations of houses, flats and hotels.

Should I install windows with concealed hinges?

As you can see, the range of advantages of concealed hinges in windows is extensive. They satisfy the sophisticated tastes of users, guarantee better tightness and thus reduce energy costs, ensure longer life of the window, make it easier to use and its functionality, ensure safety, facilitate the care and maintenance of windows. So, should you install windows with concealed hinges? Of course, install them!

Summary
