Window winter mode

Winter mode in windows - what does it mean?

blog | 13.12.2024

As the weather gets colder outside the window, we start to think about how to keep the heat in the house and at the same time not drive up heating bills. One simple way to reduce heat loss is to set your windows into what is known as winter mode. On many models of modern windows, a pressure adjustment function is available, so that the window sits better against the frame and protects more effectively against cold outside air. It's a small change that can make a big difference to your comfort and your budget!

Window winter mode - what is it?

Window winter mode is a special option that allows you to increase the pressure of the window sash against the frame. This makes the window tighter, reducing the flow of cold air. It can be activated on most models of PVC, aluminium and timber windows fitted with locking elements such as window mushrooms, window pivots or window locking pins.

What types of strikers are used on windows?

The type of striker, which is responsible for adjusting the pressure, can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Here are the most common ones:

1. Dash or dot – If the dash is parallel to the ground, or the dot is close to the gasket, this is a sign that the window is in winter mode, which increases the tightness.

2. 180º rotation – urning the striker 180º switches the window to summer mode, which allows more airflow, which is ideal on warmer days.

3. Different diameter castors – In some strikers you will find castors of different sizes. Setting the largest castors towards the seal means summer mode and the smallest castors mean winter mode.

How do I set the window to winter mode?

To switch your window to winter mode, there are a few simple steps:

1. Locate the locking catches – You will usually find these on the sides of the window sash.

2. Turn the striker to the winter position – Depending on the markings, position the dash or dot so that it faces parallel to the ground or close to the gasket.

3. Check the pressure – Close the window and make sure it is well pressed against the frame.

Properly adjusting the catches can significantly improve the thermal comfort in your home and also reduce heating costs.a.

Why switch your windows to winter mode?

1. Energy savings

By reducing draughts and providing better insulation, windows in winter mode help to reduce heating costs.

2. Higher thermal comfort

Airtight windows make your rooms more pleasantly warm and prevent cold gusts from entering.

3. Better sound insulation

Stronger pressure reduces noise coming from outside - which is especially useful if you live near a busy street.

Does winter mode affect ventilation?

Remember that winter mode increases airtightness, but don't forget about ventilation. Even on cold days, it's worth opening the windows for a few minutes a day to let in fresh air and prevent dampness.

Summary

Window winter mode is a simple way to increase the energy efficiency of your home during the heating season. Setting window winter mode reduces heat loss and improves thermal comfort. It's also worth remembering to change to summer mode regularly with the end of winter to optimise airflow.
