Window maintenance. Look after your windows before winter time

blog | 18.12.2018

Winter is the most demanding season for windows.  Very low temperature, strong wind, rain and snow are a threat to the whole woodwork in the building. Drafty and poorly protected windows during this period may cause a loss of heat and thus costs associated with extra heating. Before the beginning of the winter season it is therefore necessary to check the condition of the windows and protect them accordingly.

Window maintenance

The maintenance of windows should start by washing them, it is important to choose a day with the right weather. It would be good if it is warm enough, but the sun cannot be too intense. Choose the right cleaning agent. There is a wide range of products in stores, so it is worth reading the product specification. PVC windows cannot be cleaned with a liquid that contains strong chemicals, solvents or abrasives. An unsuitable agent may discolor or scratch the window profiles, while condensed or greasy preparations may damage the sealing.

In fact, a small amount of dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge or seamless cloth are enough to clean windows.

Since the dust on the frame is the nutrient for microorganisms that destroy the protective layer of the profiles, it is important to clean windows thoroughly.
Check the technical condition of the windows after cleaning.

The force exerted by the sash against the frame can be checked by inserting a sheet of paper between the sash and the frame. If the paper slides freely when the window is closed, the hardware must be adjusted. Such a procedure is also performed if there are difficulties in its operation.

Adjustment and maintenance of hardware

Adjustment and maintenance of window hardware is very important. If  windows in the house have only recently been installed, you can call the expert from the company that installed them.

Hardware should not be washed with preparations intended for cleaning  kitchen or bathroom, it is enough to wipe them with a damp cloth without chemical preparations, then lubricate the moving parts with special maintenance oil or technical Vaseline.

Regularly check the fastenings and the degree of wear and tear of the hardware components, if necessary, tighten the fastening screws or replace worn parts.

Replacing seals

Seals are highly exposed to atmospheric conditions. Good seals are characterized by their flexibility (they quickly return to their original shape after deformation).  We can treat them with silicone grease or technical Vaseline. Grease with rubber will protect seals against frost and moisture. However, if you notice that the seals are crushed, porous or cracked, you must replace them with new ones.

If we are forced to buy new seals and replace the old ones, it is worth investing in those made of rubber called EPDM or TPE. EDPM seals are resistant to abrasion, do not discolor, do not smogue the edges of frames and glass. On the other hand, TPE seals, i.e. synthetic rubber, are a newer material, which, in addition to properties similar to EDPM, can also be recycled. Rubber seals are also resistant to aging and remain flexible within the permissible temperature range.

Important ! Seals should not be replaced during frost.

Performing a few simple procedures will make windows function well. The heat will not escape from the room and we will extend the good technical condition of the windows.

Maintenance of windows is not difficult and does not require effort, in fact it is enough to do it twice a year, after and before winter.  Thanks to proper maintenance, windows will survive bad weather conditions without any damage and will serve us for many years to come.
